Learn the conditions first
A number effect works because its instructions and starting conditions matter. Our 1089 laboratory uses a three-digit starting number with a difference of at least two between the first and last digits. The spectator reverses it, subtracts the smaller from the larger, reverses the three-digit difference and adds. Learn the procedure yourself before presenting it. Do not promise that every three-digit number works, and do not silently change an invalid input just to preserve the ending.
Make the prediction visible
For a home demonstration, write the expected result on paper and place it face down before the arithmetic. Present it as a number trick rather than a claim to read minds. Let the spectator choose a valid starting number and work through the steps at their own pace. Keep the prediction separate from your working notes. If you use our page to learn the sequence, remember that the result is visible on the page: it is a practice tool, not a hidden prediction service.
Give the arithmetic breathing space
Say exactly which number should be subtracted from which. Write intermediate results clearly, preserving three places where the instructions require them. Avoid doing the whole calculation for a willing spectator while also insisting that they made every choice. If arithmetic is not enjoyable for your audience, choose a different effect. Presentation is about fitting the experience to the people watching, not making them sit through a procedure simply because you bought a book of number tricks.
Decide whether to share the explanation
With a learner or a family member who enjoys patterns, showing the structure afterwards can be part of the fun. During a short performance, you might leave the final moment to stand and offer to discuss it later. Our number lab includes a transparent explanation, so it is best used for learning and checking examples. Use original wording and credit instructional sources when teaching. A familiar mathematical effect can still be enjoyable when the performer gives it a clear premise and a comfortable pace.
